Courage to be our Whole Selves

Faith & Doubt

What does it mean when beliefs shift?

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

You’re serious about your faith, or you were at one point. You spent time in the church and have done everything “right,” but now your faith is shifting. You notice more doubt, questions, and uncertainty. It started out subtle, but it’s begun to feel more like a train that’s taking you someplace you’re not sure you want to go. It’s hard to say what you believe at the moment.

If your faith is changing, you wonder what that means about who you are and what you believe. The discomfort and uncertainty are starting to really wear you down and you’re not sure how to “fix” this.

You sometimes wish you could go back to when faith seemed simpler, but that doesn’t feel authentic anymore. You’ve seen too much, experienced too much, and have grown in a deeper understanding of some of the conflicts in the world and church. You’re not sure where that leaves you.

What is this?

Whether you label this as a crisis of faith or Faith deconstruction it’s the process of examining and re-evaluating the faith that’s been given to you. What is true and useful, and what is not. It can include questioning and doubts of long held beliefs in order to get to the core of what you truly believe.

This process can cut to the core of our identity and leave us feeling isolated, confused, depressed, or anxious. There is often grief in faith deconstruction, but also the potential for radical honesty about where you really are.

Counseling can be a helpful tool through this journey. It can help you explore your core beliefs, including any toxic shame messages and bad theology. It can also help with harm that come through religious trauma. You can learn skills for navigating boundaries with friends, family members, and/or church. You can also have a place to ask questions and express doubt in a safe, non-judgemental space.

Faith deconstruction can have the power to create a more integrated self. It can empower a deeper sense of spirituality and clarity. You don’t have to struggle in this process alone. Request an appointment today:
